Gillian Wearing and Claude Cahun : behind the mask, another mask by Sarah Howgate( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This beautifully illustrated book draws together for the first time the work of French artist and writer Claude Cahun (1894-1954) and British contemporary artist Gillian Wearing (b. 1963) Although they were born almost a century apart, their work shares similar themes - gender, identity, masquerade, and performance. In 2015, Sarah Howgate traveled with Wearing to the island of Jersey, in the English Channel, where Cahun lived and worked until her death, and where her archive is housed, In examining Cahun's photographs, Wearing was struck by the remarkable parallels with her own explorations of the self-image through photography. Cahun was a contemporary of André Breton and Man Ray, but her work was rarely exhibited during her lifetime. Wearing, who has exhibited extensively and is a recipient of Britain's prestigious Turner Prize, was no stranger to Cahun's work when she made the trip to Jersey -- her 2012 self-portrait, 'Me as Cahun holding a mask of my face', is a reconstruction of Cahun's iconic 'Self-portrait' made in 1927. In this book, Howgate examines the work of both artists, investigating how their cultural, historical, political, and personal contexts have affected their interpretations of similar themes."

Gillian Wearing by Gillian Wearing( Book )

14 editions published in 2012 in 3 languages and held by 65 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

British artist Gillian Wearing explores the lives of ordinary people through her photographs and films, often masking her subjects and using staging techniques to challenge the public and private identities of her individuals. This monograph provides an overview of the artist's work from the early, iconic photographs of people holding up signs with written personal confessions or thoughts, titled 'Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say' (1992 - 93), to her latest video 'Bully' (2010) in which the roles of victims and perpetrators, actors and directors are blurred. 0Exhibition : Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK / K20 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany / Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, Germany

Self made by Gillian Wearing( Visual )

9 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Self made is the debut documentary feature from Turner Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing, who placed an advert asking the public: 'Would you like to be in a film? You can play yourself or a fictional character. Call Gillian.' Of the hundreds of people who replied, seven appear in Self made, undertaking a Method acting workshop to delve into their own memories, fears and fantasies. Wearing makes the provocation that in a world where CCTV, reality television and 'fictionalised' documentary make us all into performers, reality and fiction are interchangeable commodities. Are we all playing a role, consciously or unconsciously?"--Container

Gillian Wearing : family stories by Gillian Wearing( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in Danish and English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
