Weiss (a near exact contemporary of Bach) was renowned as one of the most proficient lutenists in Europe and he composed over 200 sonatas during his lifetime. The London Manuscript contains a staggering 26 solo sonatas as well as other individual and ensemble works with flute. The sonatas are not like the typical Classical sonatas that would appear in Mozart's time, but are structured more like a Baroque suite. Weiss utilised unusually sophisticated harmonies where he frequently employed diminished seventh chords and bold enharmonic changes. His musical language is highly expressive, full of daring chromatic harmonies and intricate counterpoint. Lutenist Michel Cardin reconstructed the London Manuscript with painstaking care in a period of over 10 years, bringing the various fragments to a playable standard and carefully analysing which segments belong where

The London Manuscript Unveiled a close view of the great composer S.L.Weiss's Baroque lute tablature manuscript with a practical/musicologicalapproach by Michel Cardin( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Here is the presentation of one of the most important volumes of music of all times for solo instrument. While not strictly musicological, the approach has been to reconcile practical aspects and matters of historical concern from the performer's perspective. A peer of Bach, Haendel and Telemann, Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) was the greatest lutenist of the late Baroque, and his huge corpus of music - of an astonishing quality - is still being discovered today. "The format, program notes and charts are very well conceived, informative, scholarly, and pay close attention to detail" -- EdwardMatin, Lute Quarterly.--Page 4 de la couverture
