Reign of terror : the Budapest memoirs of Valdemar Langlet, 1944-1945 by Valdemar Langlet( )

3 editions published between 2012 and 2015 in English and held by 232 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The astonishing true story of a Swede in Hungary who stood up to Nazis and saved thousands from the Holocaust. Although the honors awarded Raoul Wallenberg are well deserved, he is only one of the brave individuals'many of whom remain forgotten by history'who saved thousands of Jews in Budapest during World War II. Among those unsung heroes is another Swede, Valdemar Langlet, the first man to create the covert cover of the "protective passport." Entirely without permission or financial support from the Swedish Red Cross, Langlet, a gifted linguist who was able to deal directly with Hungarian officials, issued so-called "Letters of Protection"'imitation passports with official-looking stamps that prevented Hungarian Jews from deportation to the death camps. But when the Germans put their Arrow Cross allies in power, and the approaching Red Army threatened to turn the city into a battleground, Langlet went further'risking his life to find placement for refugees in a range of apartments, castles, countryside estates, convents, and other safe houses throughout Budapest. First by the hundreds, then the thousands. This is the enthralling memoir of a man who took a stand during one of the most terrible episodes in world history, facing not only the dangers of Nazi forces, but also the punishment and rancor of his own country

The story of the White Buses is one of the most extraordinary humanitarian efforts of the Second World War. Yet it is a story that remains little known. At a time when the Nazis were hanging on desperately for survival, and while chaos reigned in Germany, Count Folke Bernadotte, along with the Swedish Red Cross and the Danish government, conducted negotiations with Heinrich Himmler. Between them they successfully engineered the release and transport of prisoners from concentration camps to a neutral country - Sweden. The mission became known for its fleet of distinctive buses. Painted entirely white, these vehicles carried the Red Cross emblem and Swedish or Danish flags so that they would not be mistaken for military targets. The various expeditions to the German concentration camps were long and highly dangerous, with every move watched by the SS and the Gestapo. The conditions the rescuers encountered at the camps were beyond comprehension. Due to the chaotic conditions during the last weeks of the war in Europe, it is impossible to say exactly how many prisoners were liberated in the course of the operation, but according to conservative figures the so-called White Buses helped transport at least 17,000 prisoners to Sweden by 4 May 1945. Undoubtedly, the White Buses saved thousands from a miserable existence or, worse still, death in the camps. This is the story of their journey
Contested sovereignties : government and democracy in Middle Eastern and European perspectives : papers presented at a conference organized by the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul 28-31 May 2009 by Elisabeth Özdalga( Book )

9 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relationship between constitutional arrangements and democratic developments has long been a topic of debate among political scientists and jurists. This new book explores these questions with special reference to the Middle East, where political instability and problems related to the consolidation of nation states are particularly acute. Taking the political crisis over the presidential election in Turkey in 2007 as its starting point, the book provides in depth analysis of how these events illustrated the ways in which the constitution and its supporting institutions could be mobilized for narrow and highly controversial political purposes. Questions of state sovereignty are then explored in the cases of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Palestine and Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco, contrasting them with European examples such as Sweden's constitutional arrangement in relation to its monarchy, and the European Union's current constitutional transformation. This is an important book for students and scholars interested in contemporary and historical perspectives on issues of nation building, state sovereignty and democracy in Europe and the Middle East
