"Curated by Hedi Slimane, the design director of Dior Homme, 'Paris' was in many ways a reaction to our tendency toward the baroque - one that we had just fully indulged in the previous issue, Touch. For Paris, leading architects, artists, and designers portrayed the City of Light as the City of Tomorrow, with clean, spare lines and a strict white, gray, and black color palette. The issue was a testament to Hedi's reductionist aesthetic and an exploration of a burgeoning new movement: art that has its base in architecture. To this end, architect Greg Lynn designed a lacquered gray monolith with an interior topography engineered to hold the bound book as though suspended in space. Contributors included architects Neil Denari, Andreas Angelidakis, and Dominique Perrault; video artist Chris Cunningham; artists Thomas Demand, Elisabeth Ballet, James Casebere, and Craig Kalpakjian; graphic designers H5 and John Maeda; and the French band Air"--Publisher's description

"Intermission 1 Hedi Slimane" is a project consisting of an installation at the Stazione Leopolda in Florence and a book. Hedi Slimane, the 34 year old creative director of Dior Homme, in charge of all the collections and global image, is one of the most influential designers in the world today. He is loved by the critics and admired by his colleagues. In just two short years he has transformed the powerful and famous French Maison into a contemporary icon. Slimane has developed a new male identity and style by giving fashion a conceptual scope. The installation entitled "Intermission 1" is one of the most complex and demanding Pitti Immagine production of the past few years. Four thousand square meters of the Stazione Leopolda, divided exactly in half between the two naves host the reinterpretation -- or rather the reconstruction -- of the Galerie des Glaces in the Palace of Versailles and the garden maze situated alongside of the famous room. In the right nave 34 gigantic gleaming steel monoliths face the mysterious space of the black labyrinth with its 400 neon lights in the left nave. The entire area is filled with the modular sound created by thirty fans whirling above. The book, also produced by Pitti Immagine and published by Edizioni Carta, is not an exhibition catalogue. It is a parallel and separate study that also focuses on the concept of the filter, transparency and refraction -- constant themes in Slimane<U+2019>s creative philosophy. "Intermission 1" is not a fashion event, insists Hedi Slimane, "and I am not an artist." Therefore, as Francesco Bonami suggests in his introduction to the book, we should view the book and the architecture as a space between art and fashion, between two conflicting mental states, between two worlds, the visual and architectural expression of a research or study process. Actually, Slimane prefers to think of the reconstruction of the Hall of Mirrors inside the Stazione Leopolda as architecture for a public space, as a setting that is totally organic in relation to the place where it is built. His desire to express his être français, his French being, between dreams and rationality is evident through it all. -- [http://www.pittidiscovery.com/en/discovery/events/list-event/2002intermission.html]

Tiré du site Internet JRP/Ringier: "This beautifully designed three-volume boxed set presents new photographic work by Hedi Slimane, the iconic fashion designer who, during tenures at Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior, has infused men's fashion with an androgynous, rock 'n' roll verve. The first volume is an album of Slimane's photographs of the Lollapalooza-esque three-day Festival Internacional de Benicássim on the east coast of Spain; the second is devoted to images of the new British and American rock scenes; and the third contains essays on Slimane's work by art critic Vince Aletti, and music critic Jon Savage. In a 2003 conversation with "Interview"'s Ingrid Sischy, Slimane discussed his beginnings as a photographer: "I started taking pictures before I even began in fashion. I didn't start with clothes until I was 16, but I had my first camera when I was 11. I've always taken pictures, almost like some people take notes or write down their thoughts." As this collection reveals, Slimane's photographs of the international music scene are as fresh as his paradigm-shifting work in fashion. Published with MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, León (Spain). "
