Explores a half-century of U.S. foreign policy from World War II to the Iraq War, revealing how, as Dwight Eisenhower had warned in his 1961 Farewell Address, political and corporate interests have become alarmingly entangled in the business of war. On a deeper level, what emerges is a portrait of a nation in transition--drifting dangerously far from her founding principles toward a more imperial and uncertain future

Sea change at Annapolis : the United States Naval Academy, 1949-2000 by
H. Michael Gelfand(
)
2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,241 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Since 1845, the United States Naval Academy has prepared professional military leaders at its Annapolis, Maryland, campus. Although it remains steeped in a culture of tradition and discipline, the Academy is not impervious to change. Dispelling the myth that the Academy is a bastion of tradition unmarked by progress, H. Michael Gelfand examines challenges to the Naval Academy's culture from both inside and outside the Academy's walls between 1949 and 2000, an era of dramatic social change in American history. Drawing on more than two hundred oral histories, extensive archival research, and his own participatory observation at the Academy, Gelfand demonstrates that events at Annapolis reflect the transformation of American culture and society at large in the Cold War and post-Cold War periods. In eight chapters, he discusses recruiting and minority midshipmen, the end of mandatory attendance at religious services, women's experiences as they sought and achieved admission and later served as midshipmen, and the responses of multiple generations of midshipmen to societal changes, particularly during the Vietnam War era. This cultural history not only sheds light on events at the Naval Academy but also offers a novel perspective on democratic ideals in the United States

Odysseus in America : combat trauma and the trials of homecoming by
Jonathan Shay(
Book
)
4 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in English and held by 894 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In his acclaimed book Achilles in Vietnam, Dr. Jonathan Shay used the Iliad as a prism through which to examine how ancient and modern wars have battered the psychology of the men who fight. Now he turns his attention to the Odyssey, Homer's classic story of a soldier's homecoming, to illuminate the real problems faced by combat veterans reentering civilian society. Drawing on his years of experience working with Vietnam veterans, Shay illustrates how the Odyssey can be read as a metaphor for the pitfalls that trap many veterans on the road back to civilian life. He also explains how veterans recover, and advocates changes to American military practice that will protect future servicemen and servicewomen while increasing their fighting power. The Odyssey, Shay argues, offers explicit portrayals of behavior common among returning soldiers in our own culture -- danger-seeking, womanizing, explosive violence, drug abuse, visitation by the dead, obsession, vagrancy, and homelessness. Supporting his reading with examples from his fifteen-year practice treating Vietnam combat veterans, Shay shows how Odysseus's mistrustfulness, his lies, and his constant need to conceal his thoughts and emotions foreshadow the experiences of many of today's veterans. Throughout, Homer strengthens our understanding of what a combat veteran must overcome to return to and flourish in civilian life, just as the heartbreaking stories of the veterans Shay treats give us a new understanding of one of the world's greatest classics. With a foreword by Vietnam veteran U.S. Senators John McCain and Max Cleland, representing bipartisan support for what Dr. Shay is trying to accomplish, Odysseus in America is an impassioned and cogent plea to renovate American military institutions -- and a brilliant rereading of Homer's epic

Space situational awareness : status of efforts and planned budgets by
United States(
)
1 edition published in 2015 in English and held by 299 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"As space has become more congested and contested, the potential for intentional and unintentional threats to space assets has increased, according to DOD. In response, the SSA mission focus has expanded from awareness of the location and movement of space objects to also include assessments of their capabilities and intent to provide battlespace awareness for protecting U.S. and allies' people and assets. In a report accompanying a bill for the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015, the Senate Armed Services Committee included a provision for GAO to estimate the cost of SSA efforts over the next 5 fiscal years. This report includes information we provided in a briefing to the committee, updated to reflect current data on SSA workloads and to incorporate additional agency technical comments. This report addresses the following: (1) What are the government's current and planned SSA-related research and development, procurement, and operations efforts? (2) What is the planned budget for these efforts for fiscal years 2015 through 2020? To determine the governments' current and planned SSA-related efforts and compile related budgets, we obtained and reviewed relevant program documentation, such as program budget requests and status briefings, and discussed the efforts with officials at DOD, NASA, and NOAA"--Preliminary page
