A picture is worth a thousand tables : graphics in life sciences by Andreas Krause( )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 396 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is devoted to the graphics of patient data: good graphs enabling straightƠforward and intuitive interpretation, efficient creation, and straightforward interpretation. We focus on easy access to graphics of patient data: the intention is to show a large variety of graphs for different phases of drug development, together with a description of what the graph shows, what type of data it uses, and what options there are. The main aim is to provide inspiration in form of a "graphics cookbook." Many graphs provide creative ideas about what can be done. The book is not intended to be techn

Optimal nonmyopic value of information in graphical models : efficient algorithms and theoretical limits by Andreas Krause( Book )

2 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "Many real-world decision making tasks require us to choose among several expensive observations. In a sensor network, for example, it is important to select the subset of sensors that is expected to provide the highest reduction in uncertainty. It has been general practice to use heuristic-guided procedures for selecting observations. In this paper, we present the first efficient optimal algorithms for selecting observations for a class of graphical models containing Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). We provide results for both selecting the optimal subset of observations, and for obtaining an optimal conditional observation plan. We also prove a surprising result: In most graphical models tasks, if one designs an efficient algorithm for chain graphs, such as HMMs, this procedure can be generalized to polytrees. We prove that the value of information problem is NP[superscript PP]-hard even for discrete polytrees. It also follows from our results that even computing conditional entropies, which are widely used to measure value of information, is a #P-complete problem on polytrees. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on several real-world datasets."
Near-optimal sensor placements in Gaussian processes by Andreas Krause( Book )

2 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "When monitoring spatial phenomena selecting the best locations for sensors is a fundamental task. To avoid strong assumptions, such as fixed sensing radii, and to tackle noisy measurements, Gaussian processes (GPs) are often used to model the underlying phenomena. A commonly used placement strategy is to select the locations that have highest entropy with respect to the GP model. Unfortunately, this criterion is indirect, since prediction quality for unsensed positions is not considered, and thus suboptimal positions are often selected. In this paper, we propose a mutual information criterion that chooses sensor locations that most reduce uncertainty about unsensed locations. We first show that choosing a set of k sensors that maximizes the mutual information is NP-complete. By exploiting the submodularity of mutual information we propose a polynomial-time algorithm that guarantees a placement within (1 - 1/[epsilon]) of the maxima. This algorithm is extended to exploit local structure in the Gaussian process, significantly improving performance. Finally, we show that the sensor placements chosen by our algorithm can lead to significantly better predictions through extensive experimental validation on two real-world datasets."

Evolutionary mechanism design using agent-based models by Xinyang Li( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This research complements and combines market microstructure theory and mechanism design to optimize the market structure of financial markets systematically. We develop an agent-based model featuring near-zero-intelligence traders operating in a call market with a wide range of trading rules governing the determination of prices, which orders are executed as well as a range of parameters regarding market intervention by market makers and the presence of informed traders. The market structure which generates the best market performance is determined by applying the search technique Population-based Incremental Learning, guided by a number of performance measures, including maximizing trading volume or price, minimizing bid-ask spread or return volatility. We investigate the credibility of our model by observing the trading behavior of near-zero-intelligence traders with stylized facts in real markets. Based on computer simulations, we conform that the model is capable to reproduce some of the most important stylized facts found in financial markets. Thereafter, we investigate the best found market structure using both single-objective optimization and multi-objective optimization techniques. Our results suggest that the best-found combination of trading rules used to enhance trading volume may not be applied to achieve other objectives, such as reducing bid-ask spread. The results of single-objective optimization experiments show that significantly large tick sizes appear in the best market structures in most cases, except for the case of maximizing trading volume. The tick size is always correlated with the selection of multi-price rules. Though there is no particular combination of priority rule and multiprice rule achieving the best market performance, the time priority rule and the closest multi-price rule are the most frequently obtained rules. The level of market transparency and the extend of market maker intervention show ambiguous results as their representative parameter values change in a wide range. We also nd that the results of multi-objective optimization experiments are much similar to those obtained in the single-objective optimization experiments, except for the market transparency represented by the fraction of informed trader, which shows a clear trend in the multi-objective optimization. Using the results obtained from this research we can derive recommendations for exchanges and regulators on establishing the optimal market structure; for securities issuers on choosing the best exchange for their listing; and for investors on choosing the most suitable exchange for trading

The Payment Form Threshold in Mergers and Acquisitions - A Real Options Approach by Liang Yin( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In recent years, practitioners and academics have become increasingly concerned that traditional discounted cash flow valuation models, such as the net present value model, are not capable of adequately capturing the value of managerial flexibilities to delay, grow, scale down, or abandon projects. The effect of ignorance of such managerial flexibilities can be potentially substantial, with the possibility of producing biased decisions. Real options analysis provides the insights that business investment projects can be conceptually compared to financial options and is therefore able to seize the value of managerial flexibilities.
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a theoretical model based on option pricing theory to evaluate the managerial flexibilities arising in a variety of mergers and acquisitions, which vary in payment forms. The thesis shows how transactions can be structured as a real exchange options, given the share price of each participating firm is subject to a specified degree of uncertainty. The takeover decisions of bidder or target, i.e., the takeover threshold to bid or to accept the bid, is obtained through the analysis. In addition, the thesis provides valuable theoretical insights into the following aspects:

The impact of the form of payment on the decision making process for each participant and corresponding merger terms

The payment form that minimizes the threshold to trigger a transaction

The allocating rule of mergers and acquisitions synergy when payment form threshold is employed

In the latter part of thesis, an empirical study is conducted on mergers and acquisitions completed by US public bidders between January 1985 and April 2004 excluding all financial institutions deals. Strong support is found from the data that some of the target firm characteristics such as expected growth rate and volatility are significant in explaining the payment form choices
