Cuban art in the 20th century : cultural identity and the international avant garde( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cuban Art in the Twentieth Century is an historical progression of works by important artists from a complex modern movement described by several discrete periods: Colonial, Early Republic, First Generation, Second Generation, Third Generation, Late Modern, and Contemporary Periods. The Cuban modern art movement consists of a loose group of artists, divided into generations, who counted on the moral support of an intellectual elite and who had minimal economic help from the private and public sectors. In spite of a fragile infrastructure, this art movement, along with similar movements in literature and music, played a major role in defining Cuban culture in the twentieth century

Decolonizing refinement : contemporary pursuits in the art of Edouard Duval-Carrié by Edouard Duval-Carrié( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Whether sculpture, painting, or multimedia installation, Edouard Duval-Carrié?s work navigates the historically rich and culturally complex traditions that comprise a uniquely Caribbean perspective. Duval-Carrié?s recent works attend to the themes of water, travel, and Francophone culture. For this artist, for example, water becomes both a symbolic passage and a barrier--the means by which enslaved Africans were brought to the Caribbean and modern-day Haitians migrate to the United States. Both circumstances have been driven by the force of capitalism that occupies the artist?s work materially and iconographically. This exhibition of Duval-Carrié?s art engages themes associated with the history of North Florida and the southeastern United States, including plantation agriculture, race, slavery, historical events such as Florida statehood, and such contentious historical figures as Andrew Jackson. Edouard?s exhibited works will be accompanied by displays of plantation artifacts loaned from State of Florida collections, including a portion of a nineteenth-century sugar mill and iron crosses made for cemeteries of enslaved workers.00Exhibition: Florida State Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, USA (16.02.-01.04.2018)
Broken ground : new directions in land art( Book )

2 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Curator Jeff Beekman states that Land Art, one of the seminal movements beginning in the late-1960s was largely born out of a frustration with the growing commercialization of the art world and the limitations of the traditional 'white cube' gallery. At its core this movement sought to tie together artwork and the landscape into which the works were inextricably merged. The most well-known early examples took the form of dramatic interventions into the landscapes of primarily the American Southwest. What has emerged since the formative years has become a sophisticated and varied extension of the discussions of the early practitioners. This movement has grown to encompass issues of ecology and sustainability, an exploration of how human and natural forces have shaped one another in historical and contemporary landscapes, and an exploration of past approaches to the mythologies we have about land, particularly as it relates to the concept of manifest destiny and borders. 00Exhibition: FSU Museum of Fine Arts, Florida, United States (17.02 - 26.03.2017)
