Hypnerotomachia Poliphili = The strife of love in a dream by Francesco Colonna( Book )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 371 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is hard to believe that the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, printed by Aldus Manutius in 1499, one of the most famous books in the world, read by every Renaissance intellectual and endlessly referred to in studies of art and culture ever since, has never appeared in English. One reason, no doubt, is the length and difficulty of the text. It is a strange, pagan, pedantic, erotic, allegorical, mythological romance relating in highly stylized Italian the quest of Poliphilo for his beloved Polia. The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape and costume - it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed - and its 174 woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens. In 1592 a beginning was made to produce an English version but the translator gave up after only a third of the text. Now, at last, the task has been triumphantly accomplished by Joscelyn Godwin, who succeeds in reproducing all its wayward charm and arcane learning in language accessible to the modern reader."--Jacket

Burin box and board by Lennart Forsberg( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The wood engravings, wood and lino cuts of graphic artist Lennart Forsberg are at the heart of this book. It contains thirty-nine original prints, only one of which is a tipped-in plate, plus a photo of the artist with his 1873 Eickhoff hand press. These prints, his autobiographical memoir, and all the additional texts, serve to reveal the many aspects of Fosberg's working life as an engraver, designer, and printmaker. The illustrations include fourteen engravings from Ryska Minnet [Russia Remembered] and eleven from his Two Canterbury Tales. A suitable extract from the Swedish text with its English accompanies each image. Also shown are three prints from the Vasa series, inspired by the 17th-century ship displayed at Stockholm, plus examples of lino cuts and two multi-coloured wood cuts, finishing with a print of the only wood engraved bookplate still retained by the artist."--Prospectus
Wings take us by Phil Madden( Book )

1 edition published in 2009 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In these poems about birds, text and images are interwoven into fluid shapes. Marbling, machined wood, and some wood engraving are used with a light touch. "All sorts of shapes and references can be found in this book but, above all we hope, the koan of stillness and movement."
