By the late teens Hollywood was the dominant economic and cultural force in the international film industry. The four features in this package at most have a touch of local colour (most notably George Wallace's comic persona in His Royal Highness) but basically they are not marked by Australian themes and settings. The Cheaters (1929) is a sophisticated society melodrama; Painted Daughters (1925) is a romantic melodrama in a vaudeville setting; Silks and Saddles (1921) is a romantic melodrama set in the world of horse-racing; His Royal Highness (1932) is a comic fantasy or burlesque operetta

The bushranger genre, suppressed by censorship, resurfaced in the form of an adaptation of the popular Australian classic Robbery Under Arms (1920). The trauma of our convict heritage is dramatised as full-blown Victorian melodrama in For the Term of His Natural Life (1927)
