1 edition published in 2019 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This work is part of the online informal learning of English and explores practices related to various sources of exposure of a sample of students from the University of Strasbourg. The data collected, based on a pronunciation test, a perception test and a survey, show inter- and intra-individual variability inherent to the complexity of the system in which participants evolve. With regards to Received Pronunciation and General American accents, acoustic analyses of pronunciation elements highlight oral productions composed of mixtures of characteristics of the two accents and those of the French language. The perturbation of speech production, implemented through fast speech variation, indicates a resistivity of the system for certain sounds/sequences of sounds. Results also show that television series are the most influential activities among those that promote vocal imitation and allow phonetic-phonological appropriation
Integrating pragmatic competence in teaching English to the students of medicine at Taiz University by Diana Al-Aghbari( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

One of the goals of teaching a language is to make learners aware of how to use it to serve a communicative purpose. This lies within the scope of pragmatic competence. This research deals with teaching pragmatics in a context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), namely the faculty of medicine at Taiz University. It investigates medical students' level of pragmatic competence with the ultimate aim of integrating it in the classroom. The study makes use of a questionnaire composed of a Discourse Completion Task to examine students' ability to produce speech acts and an awareness test to measure their ability to identify appropriate and inappropriate utterances. The other tool is an interview conducted to explore graduate students' perceptions towards pragmatic competence. The data are analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The study findings reveal a low level of pragmatic competence among students in the production and awareness levels. Besides, a positive tendency is shown towards the importance of pragmatic competence. Accordingly, a tentative model is proposed to incorporate pragmatic competence with the help of a medical TV show which will keep them motivated in learning English

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The aim of this study, conducted in partnership with the Department of Surgical Oncology, Centre Paul Strauss in Strasbourg, is to assess the consequences of thyroid surgery on the voice of patients, in order to identify the various perturbations caused by this surgery, and also to reveal possible compensatory strategies or readjustments that the patient may develop, alone or with speech therapy; this is a longitudinal study. The assessment was based on the analysis of acoustic signals, from which a large amount of cues related to voice quality, but also to articulatory behaviour of speakers was extracted. Production of sustained vowels allowed carrying out two spectral studies. The spatiotemporal study was made possible through the analysis of nonsense words, and more specifically through VCV sequences. We conducted three experiments on the acoustic level. The first experiment deals with the spectral characteristics of the voice of patients who underwent thyroidectomy, with no laryngeal paralysis. The second study was conducted based on spectral characteristics of the voice of speakers with laryngeal post-thyroidectomy paralysis. Our final experiment was to study spatio-temporal characteristics of the voice of speakers who underwent thyroidectomy, with laryngeal paralysis. Articulatory interpretations, made from the acoustic data, reveal perturbations of gestures on both the glottal and supraglottal levels, with readjustment strategies varying according to patients. The concept of a "target" as a control space for execution of possible articulatory and acoustic entities, which are perceptually acceptable, seems particularly relevant in this study, since disordered speakers reorganize their productions according to their own physiological and anatomical constraints, caused by the disorder

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This thesis traces a discursive genealogy of the language debates at the Council of Europe. Through a sociolinguistic and discursive approach to international institutions, different institutional texts produced between 1949 and 2008 are examined in their socio-historically situated conditions of production. The focus is on the (dis)continuity of old language ideologies in the construction of the discourse on linguistic diversity and plurilingualism and on the way the discourse on languages is a terrain which articulates, on the one hand, the ideologies of nation-states, as independent entities, and, on the other hand, the ideologies of the Council of Europe as an international institution that functions on the basis of interstate cooperation. This thesis is a critical reflection on the discourse of celebration and valorization of plurilingualism and linguistic diversity, on the role of (the discourse of) international institutions in the context of the globalized new economy and the internationalization of politics, and on the exercise of symbolic power by means of institutional and discursive apparatus

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2017 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Our thesis focuses on newcomer students in France and aims at understanding how these students integrate into French schools and exploring the educational paths they tread. Thus, this study is based mainly on the analysis of the discourse of thirteen students concerning their learning and their school experiences. It is also based on the representations that these students have of themselves, others (French students, teachers), their learning in general, their learning of the French language in particular and the context in which this learning takes place. Our thesis also focuses on the students' first languages and their role in the learning process. The link between language and identity has long been established by researchers from different disciplines. Therefore, we have tried to understand, through an autobiographical project based on the notions of multiliteracy and multimodality, how the first languages of the students can be taken into consideration in order to help them progress in both the learning of French and learning in general. We also considered the significance of such an approach in the reconstruction of these students' identities. Furthermore, in response to our initial question regarding how these students integrate into the French education system, we investigated two complementary perspectives: that of the institution through interviews with three teachers, three heads of school and two inspectors and that of the students' families through questioning nine parents. The aim of this study is to contribute to the body of research on the role of migration in the French educational context and to provide a better understanding of the current educational challenges facing our globalized society
Etude acoustique des fricatives de l'arabe standard (locuteurs algériens) by Amel Benamrane( )

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This acoustic study focuses on standard Arabic, spoken by Algerian subjects (three female and three male subjects). The main thrust of the investigations is to provide clarification on the consonantal system of the language, and more particularly on the acoustic properties of its fricatives. This system is rich in places of articulation: labiodental, interdental, alveolar, postalveolair, uvular, pharyngeal and laryngeal. It is also characterized by the phenomenon of pharyngalisation, appearing in two pairs of fricatives: the interdental and alveolar fricatives. Based on our acoustic study, we have observed the properties relating to the frication noise of fricatives by calculating their center of gravity (CoG). We have also discussed the characteristics of the first four formants of the back vowels, short [a] and long [a:], in the vicinity of the fricatives, in CV sequences. Then, we have study absolute and relative segmental durations, relative intensity and harmonicity (HNR) of the fourteen fricatives of our study. This analyse was carried out to target their place of articulation and the phonological voicing contrast. Finally, we have tried to address the features of posterior locations, uvular, pharyngeal and laryngeal, which proved to be relevant as contrastive phonetic cues

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This work focuses on tarifit of the provinces of Nador, in order to study gemination in this variant of Berber spoken in Morocco. This is an acoustic and articulatory X-ray investigation. A general overview of the tarifit phonological system is proposed. In a critical review of the literature, we tried, first, to show the different arguments concerning representation of geminates as one or as a sequence of two segments. We then discussed the contradictory debates on the concepts of tension and gemination. Our research is carried out within the perturbation and readjustments paradigm, by varying speech rates. Main results in the acoustic domain show for all consonants, singletons and geminates, produced in normal or fast speech, that consonantal closure is the main cue that allows distinguishing them. On the articulatory level, the study of the timing of articulatory parameters indicates, among other things, that it is the apical, velar and uvular contact, longer for geminates, which is the preferred parameter of the singleton vs. geminate phonological distinction. Analysis of profile views gives the following results regarding contact extent (mm) : a) contact extent for plosives are systematically larger for geminates than for singletons ; b) contact extent increases as one goes from the apical consonant to the velar (rather palatal) consonant, then to the uvular consonant. Results are discussed in terms of articulatory - acoustic relations

1 edition published in 2017 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The analysis of conjunction in written compositions of learners has never been very successful in linguistic research, particularly in the context of French as (mother tongue, second or foreign language). This relative lack of interest of scholarly literature regarding conjunction in written compositions, related to the learning process of languages is probably one of the reasons we chose the present study, especially because we can highlight throughout this topic the fact that analyzing the way allophone students write in French as second language, most of them are English speakers (a comparison made between two levels of linguistic competence, I.E. level 2 and level 4) may offer the opportunity to look more closely into the conjunctive means ( in terms of number, variety and use). Such an approach appeared very interesting to us, thanks to the numerous insights it generally provides into the conjunction problem and its other morpho-syntaxic and semantic substitutes. It is true that such a work, even so designed, could not be conducted without a first detour into the most well known works in French. As for the analysis grid we endeavoured to construct, it consists of four parts, each part is supposed to conduct a case-by-case analysis. But it is likely to achieve in general varied satisfactory results. These results, some of which seem to corroborate other works' results focusing on the conjunction analysis in texts written in languages other than French, should also allow us, we believe,to be able to discern significant differences between the levels of observation regarding the number of conjunctive elements, both in their variety and in their various uses

1 edition published in 2019 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The present work focuses on the production of speech after surgical excision of a tumour in the oral and oropharyngeal cavity in order to detect various articulatory-acoustic perturbations that such a surgical operation entails. This longitudinal study aims to reveal possible compensation or readjustment strategies that the patient can deploy, alone or with the help of speech therapy. The originality of this work lies in the importance given to the spatial and temporal organisation of speech, by examining several articulatori-acoustic inter and intra segmental parameters. Three linguistic tasks have been investigated: 1) the production of sustained vowels [i, a, u]; 2) the production of VCV sequences in two different contexts, the consonant being one of the French plosives or fricatives [p, t, k, b, d, g, s, ʃ, z, ʒ]; 3) a subjective assessment of speech quality after glossectomy. The acoustic recordings of the patients' productions were carried out during 4 phases: 1) preoperatively (the day before the intervention); 2) in Postop1 (between 1 and 1, 5 months); 3) in Postop2 (3 months after surgery); 4) in Postop3 (6 months after the intervention).Ten patients and three healthy subjects were recorded. The data collected from patients, informing about perturbations and adjustments, corresponded to temporal and spectral measurements carried out on the acoustic speech signal. The also included self-evaluation by the patients of the quality of their speech (Speech Handicap Index or SHI). Perturbation of the articulatory gestures and subsequent adjustments, observed for each patient from the acoustic data, allowed highlighting characterisations of vocalic and consonantal productions after tumour excision localised in the speech production system. It was interesting to realise that changes in lingual synergy with different structures in the vocal tract, as well as anatomo-physiological changes in the oral cavities, provoked by glossectomy, prevent some patients from attaining expected articulatory targets. However, productions generally remain within viability domains, ultimately corresponding to intelligible articulatory-acoustic productions
Language policy and practices in early childhood education and care (ECEC) : a case study of an english-french bilingual crèche in Strasbourg by Eloise Caporal-Ebersold( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

1 edition published in 2016 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

We analyse EU legal language, compare and contrast French characteristic structures with those of BCMS and examine problems related to the translation of EU legal texts into this language, formerly named Serbo-Croatian and today known by the initials of the names: Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian. This research is based on an analytical approach to a parallel corpus consisting of four language versions (English, French, Croatian and Montenegrin) of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the European Communities and their Member States, of the one part, and the Republic of Montenegro, of the other part. This document is part of the EU's international agreements which is a pillar of the Stabilisation and Association process, the framework for the integration of Western Balkan countries into the EU
Analyses linguistiques des proverbes français et azerbaïdjanais by Sabina Mahmudova( )

1 edition published in 2012 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The proverb, a simple but at the same time enigmatic linguistic form, is the one of the oldest genres. This is a form of the oral speech existing in all cultures of the world. The use of proverbs in the spoken language enriches the speech, and their illocutionary power in human communication is still striking. Proverbs have long been neglected by linguists, as in the course of time they were considered as frozen expressions and have not arose any particular interest in terms of language. This research paper emphasizes the study of linguistic, particularly semantic influence of proverbs in the oral speech; our task is the study of specific features of proverbs in French and Azerbaijani and their comparison. The first part of the paper is actually theoretical. During examination of various issues, specifically metaphoricalness, semantics, argumentation, and universality as well as artistic and cultural aspects of the mode, there are revealed the definitive and prototypical features of the proverbial speech. The second part is devoted to the comparative analysis of French and Azerbaijani proverbs from the perspective of intercultural parmioligy. The comparison was carried out mainly at the syntactic and semantic levels and applied to two lists of proverbs (chapters I-III). In the fourth and final chapter entitled « Problems of translation and equivalence » is researched the possibility of obtaining of a semantic equivalence in the analysis of paremies in various working languages. We therefore had recourse to use of images - the linguistic means which bring to light a number of representations of an extra-linguistic reality. The paper ends with the conclusion of the research; an attachment including two detailed lists of Azerbaijani and French proverbs and a bibliography containing the articles, papers and web sites referred to

1 edition published in 2018 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Our thesis aims at studying the consequences of total or partial removal of the thyroid gland due to thyroid dysfunction, followed or not by a radiotherapy treatment, in the field of clinical phonetics. This type of intervention usually perturbs the speech production system and sometimes leads to permanent (less than 5% of cases) or transient degradation of voice quality. The work intends to be a contribution to research carried out in clinical linguistics and phonetics, more particularly in the area of compensatory or readjustment phenomena developed by patients, following perturbation provoked in their phonatory system. The work was carried out in collaboration with the Group Saint-Vincent Hospital, and more particularly with the Clinique Sainte-Anne of Strasbourg, within the department of thyroid surgery. Our study is longitudinal since we have followed a cohort of patients, who underwent thyroid gland surgery, for at least one year, acquiring acoustic and aerodynamic data every month, the postoperative examination having revealed or not a lesion in the mobility of the vocal folds. We have studied possible compensation or readjustment strategies that patients were able to deploy by themselves or with the help of speech therapy, in order to assess the flexibility of the speech production system. The purpose is thus to evaluate the flexibility of the speech production and perception system and to try to understand how this system works based on a specific dysfunction of pathological origin. It is thus a question of determining the limits of physical deviations imposed by linguistic requirements of clarity of the speech perception system. Through the various investigations that we have conducted, we have tried to account for possible viability of perceptually stable phonetic and phonological units, despite an omnipresent variability in the physical, articulatory, physiological and acoustic substrate. Particular attention is paid to societal dimensions related to quality of life (vocal fatigue, satisfaction of linguistic productions, self-esteem, etc.)

1 edition published in 2014 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The thesis "Aligned bilingual French - Russian corpus : the case of par" presents a study describing several abstract meanings of the preposition par in French and of its Russian equivalents in the framework of Corpus Linguistics (J. Sinclair). Exploring authentic examples from our aligned bilingual corpus as well as from existing corpora allows us to propose criteria for distinguishing more clearly between "cause to effect", "aim to means", "support to manner" meanings of par in French, and to reveal a continuum of its equivalents in Russian language : morphologic cases, prepositions, complex prepositions, semantic and syntax transformations of the whole sentence. Taking into account particularities of prepositions as lexico -grammatical category, we also refer to descriptive tools proposed in the framework of enunciative linguistics (J. J. Franckel, D. Paillard) : identity of a preposition, its definition by the scheme X R (preposition) Y, distinction between the prepositions of zoning and of differentiation

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This research fits into the overall framework of FLE/FLS teaching methods and more precisely, of spoken French pronunciation. It deals with the difficulties of native Hungarian learners in oral production. While the sounds of the two languages have some similarities, most of the interferences are to be found in the vowel oppositions (Hungarian phonological duration vs French phonetic duration), the pronunciation of certain consonants and prosody (Hungarian tonic intensity stress vs durational rhythmic French accent). Various experimental methods commonly used at the Institut de Phonétique de Strasbourg were applied : spectrography for the quality and duration of vowels, and for the prosodic characteristics, laryngography for pitch assimilations and consonant contacts. Analyses therefore lean both on the segmental and the supra-segmental levels. This work is more than just a comparative and contrastive study of languages, as it goes beyond by focusing on didactic and pedagogical purposes, using explanations and remediation tips. We hope that it will be useful to French teachers in Hungary, but also to our Hungarian colleagues who may not always be aware of some typical and redundant faults, starting from the same substrate as their learners

1 edition published in 2013 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
