This book focuses primarily on the advantages and implications of sustainable bioenergy production in terms of ensuring a more sustainable world despite its growing energy demands. It addresses a new concept that focuses on the interactions between different uses of agricultural land (for example, agriculture for food, forage or energy and nature conservation) and their ecological, economic and societal impacts. This research concept provides new insights into the competition for resources and the synergies between different land uses. Until recently, the transition towards renewable energy has been generally misunderstood as only an economic demand, rather than as a means to gain various social and ecological advantages. Today biomass can be produced to generate energy and renewable raw materials, while simultaneously benefitting soil resources, water resources and biodiversity. The transition to a 'greener' economy is an important precondition in order to achieve the sustainable development of societies. To develop a modern, forward-looking energy supply from biomass, such as biomass for heat and power generation, and liquid biofuels for transport, there should be a balance between the amount of biomass required for food production and for material purposes. Crop types, production methods and conversion technologies need to be matched with local conditions within the different landscapes to establish a national transformation plan, and to reduce the increasing land-use competition between food/fodder versus energy crop production, as well as the use of forests for energy. Rethinking the linkages between bioenergy, climate change, land use and water requires an integrated assessment of the energy, land and water nexus. This book highlights research aimed at providing an integrated approach to sustainable bioenergy development and seeks to improve people's understanding of bioenergy's potentials for the future. It will be of interest not only to those involved in sustainable energy, but also to environmental planners, agriculture and soil specialists, and environmental policy-makers

In einem interdisziplinären Ansatz werden die Chancen und Risiken der Bioenergie im Kontext einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung beleuchtet. Es werden Schwierigkeiten und Wege zu ihrer Überwindung aufgezeigt, wie die Produktion und die energetische Nutzung der Biomasse mit den Anforderungen des Klimaschutzes, der Biodiversität, des Landschaftsschutzes sowie der Nahrungsmittelversorgung aber auch mit ökonomischen Aspekten in Einklang zu bringen ist. Die teilweise konträren Argumente müssen in gemeinsamen Beratungen abgewogen werden, eine Basis für die Akzeptanz bei den Akteuren und der Bevölkerung. Es werden Werkzeuge zur Entscheidungsunterstützung und Lösungsansätze zur Problemminimierung auf lokaler wie regionaler Ebene vorgestellt. Es wird beispielweise gezeigt, wie Energiepflanzen zum Artenreichtum beitragen können, wie die Akteure konsensorientiert zusammengeführt und Dorfbewohner in Entscheidungen integriert werden können, aber auch welche ökonomischen Folgen für die Landwirte und die regionale Wertschöpfung resultieren. Es wird angeregt, auf belasteten Flächen Energiepflanzen anzubauen, die wenig Schadstoffe aufnehmen. Weiterhin wird gezeigt, wie Emissionen von Schadstoffen bei der Verbrennung von Biomasse minimiert werden können

The conversion to renewable energy sources contains a number of challenges. This work focuses on selected questions from the two subject areas: Entrepreneurial investment behavior concerning biogas plants and Contracts for the supply of raw materials for biogas plants Entrepreneurial investment behavior concerning biogas plants: The German government is planning to increase the share of renewable energy sources. In this context, it is important to understand the decision-making behaviour of farmers regarding investments in renewable energy systems that generate energy from biomass and farmers & rsquo; reactions to investment-support measures. To study this behaviour, we conduct a survey and confront farmers with a hypothetical opportunity to invest in a biogas plant. Our findings reveal that farmers have heterogeneous investment thresholds. Their investment decisions are mainly driven by capital costs and the subjective perception of the risk resulting from the investment. Other decision parameters like sustainability and non-monetary objectives that are also examined in this study, play only minor roles. However, bounded rationality is an important factor. Moreover, the influence of an investment subsidy was analysed. Only about half of the amount of the subsidy as expected according to normative forecast models is reflected in an increased willingness to invest. Furthermore, farmers who have previously invested in bioenergy plants show lower investment thresholds and have stronger reactions to the subsidy. Regarding the expansion of renewable energies these findings are meaningful for policy impact analysis
