Translating fixed expressions in three Slovene translations of Oscar Wilde's The importance of being Earnest = Prevajanje ustaljenih besednih zvez v treh slovenskih prevodih dela Oscarja Wildea The importance of being Earnest : diplomsko delo by Petra Sajtl( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The thesis deals with the translation of fixed expressions in the play The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and in its three Slovene translations: Važno je imenovati se Ernest by Joţe Faganel and Mojca Kranjc from 1983, Glavno je, da si ljubček by Joţe Javoršek from 1970 and Kako važno je biti resen! by Mira Mihelič from 1967. The theoretical part introduces and problematizes the notion of fixed expressions and defines it in view of other phraseological units. Further on, it offers different approaches to translating fixed expressions. The analysis is based on the corpora consistingof sentences with English fixed expressions and Slovene translationstogether with their techniques of translation: translation by fixed expression, semantic translation, functional translation and omission. Finally, I draw conclusions whether there are significant differences in translation of fixed expressions in the Slovene versions, and if so, how they can be accounted for
Tenses and subordinators in English conditional clauses = Raba časov in veznikov v angleških pogojnikih : diplomsko delo by Ajda Plauštajner( Book )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The thesis deals with the use of tenses and subordinators in the English conditional clauses. In the theoretical part, the definition and the general grammatical form is presented, as well as the different types of categorization (direct / indirect, open / rejected, referring to the past, the present and the future). The focus is directed towards the theory of the use of the tenses in all types of conditionals and their grammatical features, which are present especially in the past tense and in rejected conditionals. Following is the presentation of the conditional subordinators. The research presents the analysis and the categorization of the collected examples of the conditionals from three sources - Jack Kerouac's On The Road, selected song lyrics and newspaper articles. The use of tenses in connection with the subordinators is analysed and theoretical conclusions are drawn

Erroneous written English in the Chinese environment Napake pri pisni angleščini v kitajskem okolju : diplomsko delo by Tadej Pesjak( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Multiple adjective and noun premodification in English nominal phrases compared to Slovene and Swedish = Zaporednje pridevnikov in samostalnikov v vlogi levega prilastka v angleških samostalniških besednih zvezah v primerjavi s slovenščino in švedščino : diplomsko delo by Uroš Ralović( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this thesis is to examine (1) the unmarked order of multiple premodifiers and (2) premodification by nouns in English, Slovene, and Swedish. It seeks to portray both similarities and differences between the three languages in regard to both of these topics. It shows that Feists theory on different zones of premodifiers and their orders in English can be successfully applied to premodifiers in Slovene and Swedish as well. Using examples from reference books and corpora, this then exposes differences in orders across the languages, both inside the zones and outside of them, which challenges the theories of universal hierarchy of adjective orders. The part on nominal premodification shows on concrete examples that Slovene equivalents of English noun premodifiers change word class and/or position in the phrase, whereas in Swedish they become parts of compounds. Furthermore, Slovene disambiguates potential structural ambiguity that might arise in English phrases with multiple noun premodification, whereas Swedish does not always

Military and warfare euphemisms in English Vojaški in vojni evfemizmi v angleščini : diplomsko delo by Nina Gorše( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

With the rise of the British Empire and the growing power of the USA, the English language started to spread around the world and has now become a global language which is to some extent present in most countries. During thisprocess, new variations of English started to emerge. In China, English isused as a foreign language and is now present there in two variations. One is a developing New English called China English, and the other an interlanguage called Chinglish. They both contain some characteristics of the Chinese language - the former is affected in a positive, the latter in a negative way. This paper examines the global spread of English, the two variations of English in China, and the mistakes that occur in Chinglish, in order to better understand which are the most prevalent and why they occur. Through an analysis of 300 examples of Chinglish, it was discovered that wrongword choices, spelling, and word for word translation are the most frequent mistakes. These and other mistakes in Chinglish can possibly be attributed to poor English skills, negative mother tongue transfer and relyingtoo much on machine translation
