STUDIES ON THE TOXINS OF PSEUDOMONAS COCOVENENANS( )

1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Fatal food poisonings have repeatedly occurred amongst the natives of the densely populated parts of Mid-Java in Indonesia. These were caused by the eating of coconut-products (bongkrek) that had been inoculated with moulds (Rhizopus oryzae). A study of the background of these poisonings was made round about 1930. An extensive investigation brought to light the fact that sometimes a bacterium developed instead of the mould with which the defatted coconut was inoculated and this secreted a very active poison. This bongkrekic bacterium was identified as belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and it got the name Pseudomonas cocovenenans. The toxic compound, bongkrekic acid, was isolated from cultures of this microorganism on moist, defatted copra. This isolation was worked out by using extraction procedures followed by thin layer chromatography or liquid-liquid chromatography on Sephadex. The concentration of bongkrekic- acid at the different phases of isolation was determined by measuring the UV- absorption or the antibiotic activity against Cladosporium cucumerinum
Assessing business transaction standards and their adoption: A cross case analysis between the SETU and Vektis standards: by W Berends( )

1 edition published in 2010 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Nowadays businesses increasingly want to be interoperable so that they can collaborate with other organizations. Interoperability can be achieved through the use of business transaction standards, by which the organizations that use the standards collectively form a value added network. However the effectivity of these standards is largely dependant on the number of organizations that have adopted it, and thus it is very important that the standard conforms to the conditions that organizations have towards adopting these standards. Building on recent literature describing technical standards (van de Kaa, 2009), we have constructed a model through which standard aspects can be compared with the adoption conditions that organizations have. Subsequently cross case analysis methods were used to identify important aspects that influence the adoption of business transaction standards, as well as the identification of methods by which the aspects can be adapted by an Standard Development Organization (SDO) so that higher standard adoption is achieved. This evaluation can give managers and SDO's a higher understanding on standards itself and the domain it is supposed to function in. The cases demonstrated that early involvement of organizations with high market powers (preferably through a federation that represents these organizations) is important for adoption whereby the development and maintenance of the standard should preferably be funded by those organizations that have most to gain from broad standard adoption. Furthermore open characteristics, modularity and efficient business processes are perceived imperative for the adoption of business transaction standards

Studies on the effect of ultraviolet light on certain constituents of nucleic acids and related subjects (energy transfer in aqueous solutions)( Book )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The dimerization of thymine in DNA and in a rapidly frozen aqueous solution as a result of UV-irradiation has been confirmed by a great many research workers. The remarkable effect of neutral compounds on the amount of the dimerization in DNA has been investigated in more detail. The conclusions are in agreement with our hypothesis about the important effect of ordered water molecules around the nucleic acids. Orotic acid, another pyrimidine derivative, appears to show also a dimerization-reaction if an aqueous solution of this compound is irradiated by UV-light. This photochemical conversion occurs even in non-frozen aqueous solution. The irradiation product was isolated and purified. According to a rontgenographic investigation the di-orotic acid contains crystal water. In the work on the energy transfer we have found the first examples of an energy transfer in aqueous solution. All available evidence points to triplet-triplet transfer. (Author)
