Theater of the oppressed as a pedagogical method for engagement and conscientização in a Chicana/o studies classroom by Michael Gutiérrez( )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This qualitative study explores the potential of Augusto Boal's Theater of the Oppressed as a pedagogical approach to promote student engagement and what Paulo Freire terms conscientização (conscientization) within a lower-division Chicana/o Studies university classroom. The Theater of the Oppressed is a set of highly interactive games, exercises, and techniques designed to engage participants in a "problem-posing" dialogue. Despite the Theater of the Oppressed's fundamentally pedagogical nature and its growing popularity in the U.S., it is very rarely used inside non-theater classrooms. In this study, the Theater of the Oppressed exercises were not used to teach about the Theater of the Oppressed but rather were incorporated as part of a larger Freirean classroom approach to provide an opportunity for students to engage with the course material in a variety of ways. The activities were used for a total of two weeks out of the 16 week semester. This study shows the results of that intervention as evidenced through an online survey, students' writings, and interviews. The data revealed that students in this environment exhibited a high level of engagement in the course largely due to the pedagogical approach of the professor and relatability of the course overall. Evidence was also found that the course was promoting shifts in conscientization for some students. The data strongly suggests that the Theater of the Oppressed served to broaden the types of engagement and participation already happening in the classroom by providing students with new ways to engage with the content and opportunities for face-to-face interactions. The Theater of the Oppressed promoted critical engagement through enjoyable student-to-student interactions, by highlighting the relatability of student experiences, by promoting the exchange and valuing of others' ideas, and by helping students see in new ways. As evidenced by students' comments, this study demonstrated the power of an engaging, relevant, responsive, and critical pedagogy in action. Moreover, it showed the Theater of the Oppressed can be a potentially valuable tool to supplement the pedagogical repertoire of teachers concerned with promoting dialogical encounters which could in turn develop a deepening critical consciousness

From Patton, to Bailey, to Pepper : illuminating the musical contributions of Native Americans in jazz and the blues by Michael Gutierrez( )

1 edition published in 2020 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When considering iconic musicians like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, or even Jimi Hendrix, one would be surprised by the amount of Native American heritage that can be traced back through their history. In my research I will dive into this history and illuminate the contributions of Native Americans in the creation and development of American music. This history has always been hidden away from bibliographies and stories, but I feel that it is important to remember that these two cultures have been intertwined from early on. My wish is to not take away from the African American story, I merely want to expand upon what is known so that the Native-American story can be incorporated. I want my thesis to inspire more people to research this topic and to make the readers more aware of this invisible history"--Abstract

The Role of Community Colleges in the One-Stop Career Center System. Four Case Studies. National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers Report Series Volume 1, Number 5 by Michael Gutierrez( Book )

1 edition published in 1997 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report studies how public community colleges in different states are approaching and fitting into the one-stop career center system (osccs). The comparison study analyzes state and federal legislation to determine the following: osccs development; how OSCCs are involving public community and technical colleges; the different roles these colleges can assume within the osccs; and the pros and cons of osccs for these colleges. Chapter 1 addresses what is wrong with the work force development system. It covers the work force development system bureaucracy and creation of an integrated delivery system. Chapter 2 paints an historical picture of the work force development system in the United States. Chapter 3 covers the composition of the osccs. Chapter 4 depicts the history of public community and technical colleges and their role as work force development entities. It also compares the services of public community and technical colleges with what is required to function as a U.S. Department of Labor-approved osccs. Chapter 5 presents case studies of four states: Iowa, North Carolina, Oregon, and Texas, analyzing the role of public community colleges within the osccs in each state. Chapter 6 concludes the report and lists the following recommendations: pass federal block grant legislation; allow a sliding scale for services; market the osccs; link the one-stop, school-to-work, and skill standards development initiatives; and make community colleges the preferred provider of training services for the osccs. Intelligence and High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA's): A Critical Evaluation of the HIDTA Investigative Support Center (ISC)( Book )

2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate critically the ongoing reform of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Investigative Support Center (ISC). Prior to 9/11, the national intelligence apparatus was littered with flaws, including lack of information sharing, interagency conflict, and autonomous operations. The HIDTA Intelligence Support Center in New Mexico was no exception. Post 9/11, many national agencies realized that in order to address successfully the increasing threat of terror, several changes needed to be made in the intelligence system at all levels. Similarly, the HIDTA Investigative Support Center has reacted to the post 9/11 environment by more strictly enforcing its framework for information-sharing and instituting a series of changes in its institutional processes. This process of reform has yielded positive results for the New Mexico HIDTA ISC. The ISC has now transformed into the centerpiece of information exchange and interagency cooperation among HIDTA members. The ISC is also acting as a conduit or Fusion Center for information sharing between agencies investigating crimes relating to drug trafficking, terrorism, and money laundering

Interteaching : the effects of discussion group size on undergraduate student performance and preference by Michael Gutierrez( )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Interteaching is a college teaching method grounded in the principles of applied behavior analysis. Research on interteaching demonstrates that it improves academic performance, and students report greater satisfaction with interteaching as compared to traditional teaching styles. The current study investigates whether discussion group size, a major component of the interteaching process, affects student performance and satisfaction. On different days, researchers exposed participants to one of three treatment conditions (pairs, small groups, and large groups) and then assessed the effects on performance and satisfaction. The study found no apparent differences on quiz performance based on discussion group size, although students performed better following pair and small group sessions. Students overwhelmingly preferred small groups compared to pairs or large groups. These results are especially relevant for instructors teaching a course with high student enrollment, in both traditional and online courses, where managing groups of two may prove difficult
