Originally issued in parts (fascicules) 1839-1842. The first three volumes have title pages without subtitle as originally printed for these three volumes, later reprinted with the subtitle, uniform with the later volumes

This set lacks the supplementary volume "Le Prisme" issued free to the subscribers, of which no copies with colored illustrations were issued

Wood-engraved illustrations (over 400 plates, about 1500 illustrations within the text) by Gavarni (principal illustrator), Monnier, Pauquet; also Gagniet, Lami, Penguilly, and many others
